Historical Features

The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien is one of the few remaining ships that took part in the D-Day operations. Built in Portland, Maine, in 56 days and launched on June 19, 1943, this American cargo ship measures 441 feet long and 57 feet wide with a displacement of 14,245 tons. Wartime crew: 58 sailors. Armament: two 5-inch guns and eight 20-millimeter antiaircraft guns. The vessel made four convoy crossings across the treacherous North Atlantic and eleven voyages across the English Channel in support of the D-Day landings. After the war it sailed to Calcutta, the Philippines and Australia before returning to San Francisco in 1946. Restored from 1966, the ship was opened to the public in 1980. In 1994, the Jeremiah O'Brien was the only D-Day ship present at the 50th anniversary of the invasion in Normandy.
